Today, whilst checking through my e-mails, I found an invite to the Polar Rose private beta which has been going on since the end of June.

I first came to hear about Polar Rose back in December last year when I blogged about it here.

I haven’t had chance to do much with it yet and since the beta is only in its early stages, some bits aren’t going to be enabled, yet alone working properly. At the moment Polar Rose only have a Firefox plugin available and I have been able to tag various photos of myself on Flickr and some politicians and footballers on the BBC news website, as well as agreeing with photos tagged by other people.

You can also put names into the Polar Rose website and search for people, and all the photos tagged with that name will be displayed. They have four iterations of beta and they are approaching the second swiftly with different features being brought online with each phase.

I will be putting together a more indepth review once I have had chance to use it properly.

An article over at newscientisttech.com caught my eye.

It is regarding a new search engine that uses sophisticated facial recognition to allow users to identify and find people in online images and it is due to launch next month.

Civil liberties groups say the biometric-style tool could compromise the privacy of anyone who has their picture online, and with so many people putting images online whether it be a myspace profile or flickr album this could be a concern.

Although in my opinion, those who put images of themselves online waive the right to certain privacies since they are allowing anyone with internet access the ability to view the images.Where this is not true are the cases where the images have been put online without the knowledge or consent of the persons in the image.
